The deceased has been identified as Sakshi, a student of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Sector 5 RK Puram who was awaiting her class 12 results.

The incident took place at around 11 am.

As per police, the prime accused — Subhash — had wanted to marry Sakshi even though her parents had repeatedly rejected his proposal as he was double her age and a relative.

A senior police officer said Sakshi, sometimes called Pinky, was in her bedroom when Subhash entered the house with a gun. Sakshi’s parents, who are employed in JNU on contract basis, were not at home while her aunt and latter’s daughter-in-law were in another room.

“The two were having some conversation which turned into an argument. A few minutes later Subhash pumped a bullet into Sakshi’s chest from point-blank range and fled with the weapon,” said the officer adding Sakshi was the only child.

After hearing the gunfire, Sakshi’s aunt and her daughter-in-law rushed to her room and found her lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

Bhisam Raj, a neighbour who called the police, said, “The children told me that they had seen a man running out of the home after the gunfire,” adding the suspect had locked her room from outside before fleeing the house.
