To ensure that Delhi does not head for a blackout during Diwali, the city will get an additional 500MW of power from the Bawana Power Plant, which will be commissioned next month.

However, the trial run will begin shortly and will be able to generate 500MW of electricity.

Built at a cost of Rs 4,500 crore, the plant will finally be commissioned next month as the Oil Ministry has allocated natural gas for the plant which will initially generate 750MW of power.

“We will be commissioning the plant in the second week of November as Oil Ministry has informed us about allocation of the natural gas,” said Harun Yusuf, Delhi power minister.

The fate of the plant had become uncertain after Reliance Industries refused to supply gas for the plant from its KG-D6 gas fields in Andhra offshore, following delay in its commissioning. It was at this point that the Delhi Government intervened and had approached the Prime Minister’s Office seeking its intervention in getting gas for the plant. The commissioning of the plant will improve the power situation in the city up to a great extent.
