Delhi Police statistics show that the east district is the worst offender with 122 cases, followed by the southeast district which has witnessed 106 cases and southwest that has seen 102 cases. The three districts had reported 45, 56 and 42 cases respectively last year.
Asked about the reason behind the increase, Deepak Mishra, special commissioner of police (law and order), said, “The Delhi police are sensitive to crimes against women, and all police stations have been directed to register FIRs in such cases. More women are coming forward to file complaints. Over 95% cases have been solved.”
The jump in the number of molestation cases is even steeper, with 1,780 cases reported in the Capital in the first six months this year against 270 for the same period last year.
At 230, upmarket south Delhi has reported the highest figure, followed by west with 209 and east with 200. The three districts had witnessed 20, 25 and 35 cases respectively last year.
