Demand down but cuts continue in Delhi

Even as mercury showed some mercy to Delhiites on Wednesday, a huge shortfall of 500 MW spoiled the day for residents of several areas who reeled under long power cuts.
According to sources in the power department, the 500 MW supply from Dadri power plant was not available to Delhi on Wednesday. Power cuts were hence reported from the Lutyen's zone, south Delhi, west Delhi and east Delhi.
"We have not seen such long power cuts in the past five years. Power keep tripping through the day," said Shailender Gupta, a Lajpat Nagar resident.
With monsoon playing truant with the national Capital, the demand for power touched 5,305 MW. However, it was less than yesterday's demand of 5,350 MW. Delhi had witnessed a record 5,454 MW demand for power on Monday.
Power discoms, however, claimed they were able to meet the power demand on Wednesday and there were no power cuts.
Meanwhile, the situation in the NCR town of Faridabad continued to be tense where a large number of villagers staging a dharna in Ballabgarh area since last evening.
The villagers of Chainsa and Dayalpur staged a protest for over 24 hours in against prolonged power cuts. After the police and power officials assured them, the villagers returned home on Wednesday evening. The district administration, however, warned the people against pelting stones at local sub-stations and attacking power officials.
"The power crisis is natural due to delayed monsoon. Even every effort is being made to ensure uninterrupted power supply," said Balraj Singh, deputy commissioner, Faridabad.
"Action will be taken against those who will take the law into their hands," he added. To meet the rising demand for power, the authorities have stopped the supply to industrial areas during night, till further orders.
Haryana power generation corporation blamed it all on an increase in demand.
