CBI officials said Udayanidhi came to the Chennai office of the CBI and handed over Hummer which was imported in 2007 and registered in his name. They said the car was alleged to have been imported by businessman Alex C Joseph evading customs duties. Alex had imported many such vehicles.

The CBI officers later returned the vehicle to the owner. The vehicle was returned to the DMK leader after verification of its chasis and engine numbers and documents.

The CBI had seized 33 luxury vehicles from various places which were alleged to have been imported by Alex.
