Driver returns home, family says very proud of their son

It was his quick thinking that saved the life of the Israeli woman diplomat after a deadly explosion damaged the embassy car near the Prime Minister's house on Monday afternoon.

"Our son has done us proud by saving the life of his boss," SD Sharma, his father told Hindustan Times.

Manoj, who was undergoing treatment at Primus Hospital in Delhi, was discharged this evening and was brought home. A large number of people had gathered outside his house to welcome him.

He added, "When the explosion took place, my son pulled out his boss from the burning car. He then put the injured woman in an auto-rickshaw and sent her to the Israeli embassy from where she was shifted to a hospital."

Sharma said his family was contacted by the embassy officials, offering to give them security cover at their house in Faridabad.

"The embassy officials told us that they can arrange for a security cover but we said no," he said.

"Definitely, 100%" is the answer Manoj Sharma gives when asked whether he would continue to work with the Israeli mission after Monday's attack.

He was driving the car on which a bomb was attached a few seconds before the blast.

Sharma said he is recovering from the shock but would be perfectly fine in a couple of days.
