‘Drunk’ AIIMS students thrash junior doctors

Dr Shankaran, a junior resident in the department of anatomy, was returning from duty when he got into a verbal quarrel with the undergraduates, sources said.

The students were identified as the organising committee members of Pulse, the yearly students’ festival organised by AIIMS undergraduates.

“They punched him in his eyes and also kicked him. Seeing this, other senior residents reached the spot to rescue Shankaran, but they were also caught in the tangle,” said a senior resident, pleading anonymity. Four other students were injured in the row.

“Shankaran was critically injured and has suffered deep injuries in the eye. He was rushed to the ophthalmology department, where is undergoing treatment,” he said.

The other injured were also rushed to the casualty, where they are recuperating.

“It was a sad incident, which shouldn’t have happened. We have registered a medico-legal case against the students and are planning to lodge a formal FIR soon,” said Dr Abhinav Kumar, president, resident doctors’ association (RDA) at AIIMS.

Kumar, with other doctors of the RDA, met AIIMS director Dr R.C. Deka on Tuesday and informed him about the incident. They also lodged a written complaint with Deka, asking him to take appropriate action.

Their application has been forwarded to Sailesh Yadav, deputy director (administration). “We will soon order a formal investigation,” Yadav said.

Yadav said he was awaiting orders from the director’s office before taking further action.
