Online applications — introduced for the first time — were a runaway hit with 18,000 students registering and 7,500 of them submitting their applications the very same day. In contrast, 600 students submitted their forms in the colleges.

More than 54,000 seats are up for grabs at the country’s largest central university. The last date for submission is June 18.

Swami Shraddhanand College and Rajdhani College ran out of forms, leaving students to either return on a later date or to get them from some other centre.

"The university had sent us 1,500 forms and they were all gone by 12 noon. Since our college is on the Ring Road, there was a lot of rush," said Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, principal of Rajdhani College.

On campus, the highest number of forms were sold at the Arts Faculty (4,100) and the lowest at Bhagini Nivedita College (127) in Najafgarh.

Among post offices, Kalkaji head post office in south Delhi saw the most traffic with 1,800 forms sold.

"The process went off smoothly on the first day. No major hiccups were seen. The first few days are heavy on form sales while the number of submissions go up in the last week," said JM Khurana, dean, Students Welfare, DU.
