With every winter season getting colder than the previous, the east corporation has cleared a proposal to provide warm uniforms to its cleaners. They are first ones to report for work at 6am, when the winter is at its harshest.
"The workers sweep the roads, water the gardens and clean garbage bins in the cold. They require warm uniforms," said a senior municipal official.
On Monday, the standing committee approved Rs.2.84 crore to purchase uniforms for 13,000 group D employees. This section of employees has not been given uniforms for years due to delays in the unified MCD.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has been roped in to design the uniforms that will be more colourful.
According to east corporation officials, about three designs have been received of which they will pick one.
"These uniforms will be cheerful and visually appealing. They will also make spotting group D employees easier," added the official.
The uniforms will include a wind-cheater, a shawl, cloth for salwar-kameez, cloth for dupatta, a jersey and shoes for men and women. A budget of nearly R1,000 per employee has been made for good quality cloth.
A similar provision is being made for students as well. From the next session, they will wear designs made by NIFT.
Unlike the employees who will get ready-made uniforms, the municipal body will transfer the money to parents who will have to get the uniforms stitched.
