Senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said that they have deployed private security guards with loud hailers at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate Metro stations at the location where a six-coach train ends.

Whenever a four-coach train is scheduled to come, guards will make announcements in advance asking passengers to stand accordingly.

The DMRC has also decided to make changes in its signalling and telecommunication (S&T) software system so that the passenger announcement system and the passenger information display system (PIDS) installed at stations gives advance information to passengers.

“This advance information will help passengers plan their position on the platform accordingly. This modification is extremely complicated and will be done by two foreign companies — Alstom of France and Siemens of Germany. It is likely to take about three months to be implemented,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

DMRC officials accepted that the lack of information on whether the coming train was a four or a six-coach leads to a lot of chaos and confusion.

Whenever a four-coach train is arriving, passengers rush from the end of the platform to the middle, resulting in a lot of pushing and shoving.

The DMRC has also started running messages on the passenger information display system at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate Metro stations, asking passengers to stay away from closing doors of trains.

Soon, LCD TVs installed at select Metro stations will also flash messages on closing doors of trains.

“Small films educating passengers on how to step in and out of the trains in the correct manner to avoid mishaps will also be screened on these TVs,” the spokesperson said.
