'Reforms are on the agenda'

-
We have written to all universities to initiate academic reforms, including a choice-based credit system. It is up to the academic councils of the respective universities to take up the matter and implement the changes.
The student feedback system is the prerogative of each university. As for academic audits, the UGC has written to all universities to establish a Quality Assessment Cell. The cell will prepare a status report on the quality of teaching. But this is purely for internal consumption of the university.

Why is a semester-based credit transfer system good for students?
The National Knowledge Commission has proposed a transition to a course credit system, which provides students with choices.
Is it feasible to have a feedback system on the quality of instruction?
Of course. We must look at students as our customer base. We are there to meet their needs. It is the student’s future that is at stake.
What can the government do to push the concept of a knowledge economy?
We need to push implementation. Knowledge includes libraries, higher education, vocational education etc. All of these have to be improved at the same time.
