The Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested an extortionist, who had demanded Rs 10 lakh from a north Delhi-based businessman.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Friday arrested an extortionist, who had demanded Rs 10 lakh from a north Delhi-based businessman.

Police said Khalil Ahmed, from Andrews Ganj, was involved in more than 32 cases including extortion, kidnapping, attempt to murder, robbery and criminal intimidation.

He ran a well-organised extortion racket that allegedly targeted businessman, builders and shopkeepers in the Walled City area.

Deputy commissioner (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said on February 16, two henchmen at the tried to extort money from the Khari Baoli businessman at Ahmed’s behest.

“They asked the businessman to talk to Ahmed on their cellphone and Ahmed threatened him that if he did not pay Rs 10 lakh, his family would be eliminated. The businessman then lodged a complaint with the Special Cell,” said Kumar.

Ahmed was later arrested near India Habitat Centre in Lodi Colony.

During interrogation Ahmed disclosed that he began his criminal career in 1985.
