During the first eight months of 2011, Delhi had registered 1,404 fatal accidents. That number stood at 1,136 for the same period this year.
Delhi Traffic Police said the dip was noticed at all points during the day and night. While the maximum decline in accidents was during the daytime (11am-6pm), the least was during early morning (4am-8am), when police presence on roads is negligible.
The number of fatalities also dropped in all districts except one — the northeast, where 93 deaths were recorded during both years.
According to the traffic police, better traffic management, crackdown on over-speeding and drunk driving and scientific intervention in road engineering helped bring down the deaths.
