"The city of Delhi - you have welcomed the athletes and officials with your traditional warmth. All the athletes of the 71 participating teams are touched by the quality of the good hospitality," he said at the Games opening ceremony.

"Friendship can be addressed with sports. In the coming days we are going to see 11 glorious days of sport with the athletes who have the common desire to do well for the country for themselves and the Commonwealth.

"The preparation to the Games was filled with many challenges. Now in the next 11 days we will focus on the competition and follow the athletes in their quest for victory and glory. The athletes will exemplify the qualities of fair play and respect for all."

He also complimented the Organising Committee for "working tirelessly" for holding the Oct 3-14 Games.

He thanked the thousands of volunteers for giving their "time and skills" for the success of the Games.
