Foreign language courses draw hordes of students

Admissions done and dusted in their preferred course and college, the new bunch of University of Delhi (DU) students are now looking to add value to their graduation degrees and gain additional qualifications.

And topping the wish list of students are the various foreign language courses offered by the varsity.

Colleges such as St Stephen’s, Hansraj, Jesus and Mary and Lady Shri Ram offer part-time certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses in foreign languages such as French, German, Spanish and Russian.

Admissions for such courses, DU officials said, were open to all, both collegiate and non-collegiate students. All a interested student need to do is inform the respective college and enroll him/herself. Students from other colleges too can apply if their college does not offer the necessary course.

“Admissions to the part-time language courses are held in the month of July, almost as soon as the regular college enrollments are over. Students just need to come and sign up for a course. There are no entrance tests for such language courses,” said Hansraj College official.

The teachers and experts are provided to the colleges by the varsity’s relevant departments. Examinations are conducted on an annual basis by the university and on a half-yearly basis by the college.Students are awarded with a certificate at the end of one year.

A student pursuing the language course for two years is provided a diploma, while an advanced diploma is awarded at the end of three years by the varsity.

The students also have a choice of pursuing a particular language for a Masters degree course after the advanced diploma.
