Foreigners too express solidarity

Foreigners expressed solidarity with a cause that is becoming a growing concern in the city. They also stood there with posters in a language foreign to them. They are not Indians, but they will take away what they saw today, to spread the message of the SlutWalk abroad.

Foreigners expressed solidarity with a cause that is becoming a growing concern in the city. They also stood there with posters in a language foreign to them. They are not Indians, but they will take away what they saw on Sunday, to spread the message of the SlutWalk abroad.

The participants at SlutWalk, or the besharmi morcha, were interspersed with more than 25 residents from countries like Colombia, France, the UK and the US. While some attended the march after having missed it in their own country, others came to carry the idea back to their homelands.

"I think the whole concept is great since it creates awareness about the growing inequality that women face today," said Brendan Rios from the US. "The SlutWalk here has inspired me to carry it back to Colombia. The violence there is hardly brought to limelight. There is no better way than an awareness drive like this," said Olga Lucia, a tourist from Colombia.

SlutWalk may make its presence felt in European Union, too, to combat the closeted abuse meted out to the women. "There is a lot of sexual harassment in Europe. Because it is (not) reported in media, it does not mean that it doesn't exist. In fact, the rate of domestic sexual violence there is alarming," said Anne-Solene Pepin, a tourist from France.
