Goons accost car, attack occupant with baseball bats

Three armed men intercepted an accountant’s car and attacked him with baseball bats and countrymade pistols in an attempt to snatch his bag containing cash on a busy road in north Delhi’s Shastri Park on Wednesday evening, police said.

The incident took around 4.30 pm when place when the accountant, Anil Gupta, reached the Shastri Park metro station in his Ford Ikon car. Gupta was on his way home.

The police said a Wagon R car overtook Gupta’s car and forced him to stop.

Some men came out and smashed the windowpanes with baseball bats and tried to snatch his bag that had cash in it. “Soon a crowd gathered and the accused were forced to flee,” said a senior police officer.

Gupta, an employee of Ajay Plastics, was hit with an iron rod on the head when he tried to resist the assailants. The police said the accused were reportedly following Gupta’s car from his office.

Gupta was rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where he was admitted with bruises.

The police said they had registered a case of attempt to rob at the Sarai Rohilla police station.

When a crowd gathered, the three men fled in their car and left their weapons behind.

“The accused got nervous after seeing a huge crowd and they drove away. They even left country made weapons behind,” said the officer.

“We have registered a case and are looking into the case,” said Sagarpreet Hooda, deputy commissioner of police (north).

The police said they were questioning local criminals and several teams had been formed to catch the accused. Further investigations were on into the case.
