The 100 participants of the cycle rally between Ambedkar Nagar and Siri Fort Auditorium came out early on Saturday morning to create awareness about Earth Hour on March 27.
Earth Hour is a World Wildlife Fund initiative where citizens can show their support for action on climate change by turning off lights between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
“There is no better way to spread awareness about climate change and the need to think green than by cycling,” said Gautam Hosahalli, a student.
The Earth Hour initiative started in Sydney, in March 2007. India joined the campaign in 2009. 56 Indian cities participated in the campaign and saved 1000MW of power in one hour with 600MW of energy saving in Delhi alone.
“It’s quite a challenge to bring people into action. We get a lot of support from schools and colleges and many students who participated last year are back,” said Aarti Khosla, who is leading the campaign in India.
“I was part of the campaign last year and brought along friends this year,” said Akanksha Metha, a student at IILM College. “The movement is gaining momentum by word of mouth.”
Many came for the opportunity to cycle. “I don’t remember when I last went cycling. It is so liberating. The cycle track in the BRT Corridor is amazing,” said Rajeev Nair, 37.
