Haryana leaves Munak canal to new GoM

The 5th meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Committee — critical for Delhi to decide about its share of water from the Yamuna basin — on Tuesday ended with Delhi and Haryana deciding not to discuss the controversial Munak Canal issue as a new GoM has been set up for the same.

“The Centre had last week formed a new Group of Ministers (GoM) for the Munal carrier lined channel, the related debate about benefit of savings of 80 million gallons per day water and the fight over a cut by Delhi within the national territory on the Munak channel. Because of this development, this item on the agenda was not discussed as both Delhi and Haryana preferred the GoM take a stand on the issue,” said an official from the Water Resources ministry.

The new GoM is headed by hme minister Sushilkumar Shinde and has Union water resources minister Harish Rawat as one of the members.The official said other inter-state issues such as Haryana-Uttar Pradesh and Haryana-Rajasthan too were decided by respective states and hence were not discussed at the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Rawat and attended by Delhi and Haryana CMs and irrigation ministers of UP, Rajasthan and Haryana.
