The Delhi high court has directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and traffic police to clamp down on illegal parking in markets and lanes adjoining residential areas in South Extension.

The police and the civic body are to file a status report by November 23. The court also issued notice to the Kotla Mubarakpur police station SHO. The order came on a petition filed by the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of South Extension-I on traffic congestion due to illegal parkings “manned by parking mafia in collusion with SDMC and traffic police”.

“The affidavits and photos... show there is traffic congestion. Traffic police is directed to ensure free flow of traffic so that the petitioner RWA is not put to any inconvenience,” justice GS Sistani said.

“We were forced to move court again as the authorities were not complying with the 2006 court order, declaring certain areas as ‘no parking’ zones,” RWA Joint secretary Manjeet Singh Chugh said.

From the records, the court also found that parking in certain spots had been banned after its order but illegal parking resumed after a brief lull. “Earlier orders of the court have been blatantly flouted. The statement of the police before the court also makes it clear that the SDMC has taken no permission from the traffic police to resume parking,” said Chugh.
