HC refers PIL against IGI runway noise to green tribunal

After hearing it for four years, the Delhi high court on Tuesday referred to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) a public interest litigation filed by residents of Vasant Kunj and surrounding areas against sound pollution caused by aircraft landing at the IGI airport’s third runway.

Seeking directions to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Airport Authority of India (AAI) to take urgent corrective steps, the residents had told the court that they suffer 24 hours due to the roaring sound of the aircraft flying low over their area. They also sought withdrawal of environment clearance given to the runway.

The PIL contended that the noise was much in excess of the permissible limits fixed for residential areas and silent zones and it violated the Noise Pollution Rules, 2000.
