HC takes up rape-suicide case
Taking suo motu cognizance of a rape victim committing suicide at the Haryana Police Headquarters in Panchkula in Chandigarh, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday directed the Haryana government to file a status report within two weeks, on the circumstances that drove the Rohtak resident to take the extreme step.
Directing the investigating agency to carry out the probe “with utmost speed”, the vacation bench fixed the next date of hearing for July 2.
The victim — allegedly raped by two Rohtak policemen — committed suicide on June 9 in front of her two little daughters by consuming Celphos tablets and charged the Rohtak Police with protecting the accused constables. In Rohtak, a local court remanded both the dismissed policemen accused in the rape case in police custody for three days.
