Highways to Gurgaon

After the eastern and western peripheral highways, the Delhi and Haryana governments will now work on two more highways — the Northern Peripheral Highway (NPH) and the Southern Peripheral Highway (SPH).

In a meeting with the Union minister for road transport and highways Kamal Nath, Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has proposed developing two highways to improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon.

The two proposed highways will help in decongesting National Highway 8 (NH8) and Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road, which cater to all the traffic.

While the 16-km-long NPH will connect Dwarka in Delhi with NH8 near Manesar, SPH will connect Faridabad Road with NH8 near Manesar and run parallel to MG Road.

In fact, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already taken up construction of NPH.

Earlier, there were plans to construct three link roads between Delhi and Gurgaon — Dwarka to Palam Vihar, Vasant Kunj to DLF Phase III and Andheria Morh (MG Road) to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road.

Haryana’s proposal has come as alternate projects to the three link roads.

In a separate meeting with Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Nath discussed improvement of national highways in Delhi, better connectivity to Delhi airport — in view of Commonwealth Games 2010 and expediting the construction of Eastern Peripheral Expressway and land acquisitions for Badarpur flyover, among other issues.
