Hizb terrorists, SIMI activists convicted

Four persons including two Hizb terrorists were convicted for possessing explosives and conspiring to wage war against India.

Four persons, including two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, were on Thursday convicted by a court in the Capital for possessing explosives and conspiring to wage war against the country.

The other two persons, held guilty under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Explosive Substances Act, are members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

The quantum of sentence for Hizb militants Gulzar Ahmed Wani and Mohiuddin and SIMI activists Feroz Rafi and Mumtaz, convicted under section 122 of the IPC for "preparing to wage war" against the state -- will be pronounced tomorrow.
Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur, however, acquitted them of the offence of "waging war against the state" under section 121 of the IPC.

The Hizb terrorists, both from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, and the SIMI activists from Uttar Pradesh were arrested at New Delhi railway station on July 30, 2001. Police had then seized a huge haul of RDX, grenades, launchers, detonators and other explosives from them.

The Hizb men had come to Delhi to deliver the explosives to the SIMI activists. With their arrest, police had claimed to have solved six blast cases, including 2001 Sena Bhavan blast. However, the court on February 23 acquitted them in all these cases for lack of evidence.
