The Special Operation Squad (SOS) of Crime Branch traced the mobile phone of Aarushi Talwar after a week of surveillance to a person in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.
Ram Bhool, a daily wager with whom the phone was found, had started using it only in February this year. Police said he did not have money to purchase a SIM card. The SOS has detained him.
“After tracing the IMEI number to Dussehra village in Bulandshahr, we kept all the other mobile phone numbers that the user was in touch with on surveillance. At least 12 phone numbers on which he exchanged calls was put under scanner,” said a senior police officer on conditions of anonymity.
Ram Bhool was using an Idea connection. The police contacted the mobile phone service provider and traced it to his village in Bulandhshar from where he was picked up, police said.
Bhool’s sister Kusum who lives in Sadarpur colony, a slum cluster near Sector- 44 in Noida, had given the mobile phone to him last year. Police said Kusum, a sweeper at Chetram School in Noida, had got the phone at a kuccha road between Sector 44 and 45.
“As Ram Bhool did not have money he did not use the phone for nine months. Before that he kept listening to music on the phone. Bhool had not even changed the cover of the phone and the handset was in a good condition,” said the officer.
The SOS had been on the trail of the mobile phone ever since the CBI placed an advertisement declaring a reward of Rs 1 lakh on the recovery of the mobile phone.
Ram Bhool was produced in a city court on Saturday from where he was handed over to the CBI.
