The woman not only got her name changed on the passport but also listed her brother-in-law as her husband. This, she did, to avoid the attention of officers at the immigration counter of IGI Airport, police said.

Immigration officers, however, detected the fraud and handed over the duo to the IGI police. They have been booked under charges of cheating and forgery and are currently lodged at Tihar jail.

The arrested persons have been identified as Mamta, a native of Karnal in Haryana, and her brother-in-law Surinder Kumar.

According to a senior police officer, the duo had come to board a flight to Belgium from Terminal 3 of IGI Airport on Monday.

“The passport which Mamta gave for clearance was issued in the name of Prabhjot Kaur, a Belgium national. During scrutiny, the immigration officer found that the photograph on the passport did not match the passport holder. Further scrutiny revealed that the photograph on the visa was different from that on the passport,” said the senior officer.

Smelling a rat, the immigration officer seized her documents and informed his seniors.

“During interrogation, it was revealed that Mamta got married in October last year with Subhash Chand, who is settled in Belgium and runs a chemist shop with his brother Surinder. Chand wanted Mamta to settle with him in Belgium so he procured a passport for her for 6000 Euros from one Harjeet Singh,” the officer said, adding that efforts were being made to trace Singh.
