India to provide power to Bangladesh

Though tangled in domestic politics ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the government is pulling out all stops to keep the momentum in ties with key neighbour Bangladesh going.

Though tangled in domestic politics ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the government is pulling out all stops to keep the momentum in ties with key neighbour Bangladesh going.

It's now powered by India giving electricity to Bangladesh. New Delhi thinks the step of giving it 500 MW power from next month will be a substantial move. As against the installed capacity of 7500 MW, the actual electricity production in that country is just 4,500 MW.

The test transmission of electricity began at Kushtia's Bheramara sub-station on Friday and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina will join a video conference in inaugurating the commercial transmission of power imported from India on October 5.
