The Congress also felt that the resignation of the BJP patriarch was the first of a series of “repercussions” in the saffron party. While maintaining that Advani’s resignation was a matter between him and the party, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi added, “We had already said that this (Modi’s leadership) will have many repercussions.”

While Dwivedi predicted that the recent events mark the beginning of the complete degeneration of the BJP, UPA ally and J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah posed question for the BJP on Twitter: "If his (Advani’s) opinion didn’t matter to you yesterday why is his resignation a crisis for you today?"

The Left parties adopted a “wait and watch” policy while reacting on Advani’s resignation.

“We want to see how things unfold in the next few days. But one thing is clear that Advani’s resignation is not just about personality clash but opens a serious political debate on tactics to election.”

Speaking separately, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh also predicted BJP’s “destruction has begun” and wondered why the BJP didn’t wait before announcing Modi’s elevation.

He pointed out that Advani was the key force to pull the BJP up from two MPs to 182 MPs.

“If this person has demanded some more time or demanded setting up of two committees, including one headed by former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, what was the problem in waiting? After all they were not going to miss a plane,” he said.

Another Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad, however, saw the resignation as Advani’s “repentance” for his earlier sin of glorifying Modi.
