Admissions in Jamia Millia Islamia are on full swing. About 75,000 forms have been sold and about 11, 250 were submitted online. The popularity of the university is evident from the rise in applications since last year. This is not the final figure as the sales of forms for some courses are open till July.

Discarding religious reservations , Kamna Dixit, an applicant said, “The orthodox mindset that Jamia is primarily a Muslim University is changing. My friends, non-Muslims all of them, have picked up forms for language courses.”

Rakshanda Jalil, Media Coordinator, JMI said, “We have an assorted population, unlike St. Stephen’s that requires candidates to mention their religion. We do not have any special reservations for Muslims either.”

Jamia is a good option for students who don’t get admission in DU colleges. Due to its competitive intake, Jamia takes in a good chunk of students to its 222 diploma, graduate, post graduate, M.Phil and PhD courses, all on the basis of written tests followed by interviews. Forms to all these courses have been on sale from April 20.

“I have applied for the Mass Communication course. The fact that the admissions is not based on cut-offs alone gives me hope,” said Tanvi Mehra.

"We are expecting another 8000 applications as admissions to some of the courses are still open,” said Jalil. Come July, the first leg of admissions at Jamia will be over to give way to the written exams followed by interviews.
