The suggestion to build a ‘Wall of Fame’ and installation of army tanks was proposed by a group of ex-servicemen, who met vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday amid a row over an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

JNU registrar Bupinder Zutshi said: “Ex-servicemen met the V-C yesterday (Tuesday) and suggested that we display names of all those soldiers from the three armed forces who have got their degrees from JNU and were martyred. They also suggested that we display some army tanks on our campus. These are symbols and will instill feeling of nationalism and patriotism,” he said.

“These are good suggestions and we welcome them. We will consider these suggestions to give students feelings of nationalism and patriotism,” he added.

A group of retired Army personnel, who are JNU alumni, had met the V-C amid a raging row at the university and said they will not return their degrees as was being reported by some sections of the media.

“Why should we return our degrees? It is our alma mater. We came to meet the V-C to express our concerns over the controversy. We have not raised any demands. Armed forces are not the people who do such things,” Retd Lt General Niranjan Malik told reporters after the meeting with Kumar.
