After the Supreme Court lifted the ban on its student union polls, the students conducted a general body meeting to preside over its upcoming elections.

“On January 14 we will hand over charge to the election committee for them to finalise issues that need to be looked into for this year’s polls. This meeting was conducted to strengthen our struggle against the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee, which is just a tool to curb students’ democratic movement within universities,” said Sandeep Singh, president, All India Students’ Association.

With JNU primarily being a research university, the SC had increased the age limit of students contesting polls from 28 to 30 years and relaxed the attendance requirement.

There is, however, still widespread discontent among students, who believe the provisions of the committee have clipped the wings of its electoral body.
