Late night operation surprises old Delhi
Working on specific information, teams of the special cell conducted a raid at Haji Arafat guest house, located in Gali Khankhana, near Jama Masjid mosque, and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in room number 304, Karn Pratap Singh and Jatin Anand report.
Two-and-a-half years after bike-borne Indian Mujahideen terrorists fired indiscriminately at a group of Taiwanese tourists, the area near the Jama Masjid mosque witnessed yet another high-voltage drama on the night of Thursday.
Working on specific information, teams of the special cell conducted a raid at Haji Arafat guest house, located in Gali Khankhana, near Jama Masjid mosque, and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in room number 304. People were told that the ammunition was planted allegedly by operatives of Hizbul Mujahideen.
SN Shrivastava, special CP (special cell), said they learnt about the presence of arms and ammunition following the arrest and interrogation of Syed Liyaqat Shah, an alleged company commander of Hizbul whom they arrested in Gorakhpur.
According to the guest house manager Mohammad Salim, the police operation began around 11 pm when a four-member team in plain clothes arrived for routine checks. “They checked the customer entry-exit logbook and enquired about customers who were staying in our guest house. We realised the seriousness of the enquiry when around 11.30pm, around a dozen police personnel, all in plain clothes, accompanied by teams of dog squad and bomb detection/disposal squad arrived,” said Salim.
They went straight to room number 304 on the third floor. After their search, they came out with an AK-56 rifle, two magazines — containing 30 cartridges each — a map, a memory card and dry fruits. “They also seized the documents provided by the person who had hired the room on March 20. The hard disk of the computer, which stored footage of CCTV cameras, and the logbook were also seized,” added Salim.
Shrivastava said the police are now on the look-out for that associate of Shah.
