With the harvesting season around the corner, power department officials said they'll have to enforce further cuts in urban areas to divert power to rural areas of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The result: daily outages beyond the current 12-14 hours.
"The situation may improve only if the monsoon arrives in next 2-3 days," said CL Gupta, superintending engineer of the UP Power Distribution Corporation, Noida.
The situation is somewhat better in Delhi. While the power discoms claimed to have met the highest-ever demand of 5,454 megawatts on Sunday, there were power outages in several areas due to local faults.
But in Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, there has been no addition to power generation capacities even though demand has been growing steadily.
