Additional Sessions Judge Chandra Gupta also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict Ashok Narang, son of a property dealer, after charges of rape, kidnapping and wrongful confinement of the IPC were proved against him.
The court rejected the plea by the convict's counsel that a lenient view be taken as he has already undergone protracted trial in the case.
Deterrent punishment was the need of the hour to send a signal to potential offenders, public prosecutor S K Dass had said during the arguments on the quantum of sentence.
The minor victim, who was staying with her maternal grandmother at Lajpat Nagar, was kidnapped by Narang and his associate Bobby alias Balvinder Singh on the afternoon of September 29, 1998, when she had gone to a nearby market.
The convicted duo allegedly drugged the 15-year-old girl and raped her after taking her to a secluded place.
