Citing the Office Memorandum (OM), released by the Ministry of Urban Development, Ved Parkash Gupta, Chairman of the High Powered Property Tax Committee said, “This Office Memorandum clearly empowers the Urban Local Body (ULB) to collect service charges from government properties.”
“The Committee is making all-out efforts to increase the revenue by recovering more and more property tax, so that the local body can be made self-dependant,” Gupta said.
The OM, dated December 17, 2009, was issued after directions by the Supreme Court, in a case filed by Rajkot Municipal Corporation, about payment of service charges by Central Government Departments to ULBs.
Gupta also asked taxpayers to pay their property tax on time or face legal consequences.
The provisions include issuance of a show cause notice, imposition of 20 per cent penalty, recovery of tax amount by attachment and sale of moveable and immoveable property.
