MCD election: Kejriwal to address rally in purvanchali stronghold Burari

With an eye on Aam Aadmi Party’s core vote bank, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will launch his MCD election campaign on March 31 with a public meeting in Burari assembly seat---dotted with unauthorised colonies.

About 80% area of the Burari assembly seat is dominated by unauthorised colonies, which are mostly habitated by migrants from Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh--popularly called Purvanchalis. Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha is one of the about a dozen Purvanchali legislators in the Delhi assembly.

The group, considered traditional supporters of the Congress, shifted their support enmasse to the AAP from the 2013 assembly elections, and the party think tanks are making all efforts to retain their support in the municipal elections.

“Party’s national convener will begin his campaign from Burari where he will address his first public meeting on March 31,” a senior party leader confirmed.

Kejriwal is planning to hold over two dozen public meetings across the city before the campaigning for April 22 election ends two days before the polls.

Both Congress and the BJP have been making efforts to woo the migrants’ population in the unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters. The Congress recently held a convention of pradhans of unauthorised colonies at Talkatora stadium

The BJP on other hand has recently appointed Bhojpuri cinestar-turned-politician Manoj Tiwari its state unit chief. Tiwari, originally a resident of Buxar in Bihar, represents North East Delhi constituency in Lok Sabha.
