MCD worker held for procuring arms licence on forged documents

A 58-year-old MCD sanitation worker, who allegedly posed as an armyman and procured an arms licence from Jammu and Kashmir using forged documents, was arrested in New Delhi, police said today.

Jai Prakash, a resident of Sultanpuri, was apprehended by Special Cell recently following investigations into information about people possessing arms licences issued by a district magistrate in Kashmir.

Three persons - Jasbir Singh, Mukesh Dahiya and Ranjit Singh - allegedly involved in the case, were arrested in June this year.

During interrogation, Prakash told police that he is employed as a sanitation worker in MCD besides running a piggery in Sultanpuri. In order to pressurise his business rivals, he needed a gun and for this purpose, he contacted Ranjit Singh, who was previously arrested in this case.

Singh worked in ordnance depot in Shakur Basti as a sweeper and was involved in providing arms licence to civilians by fabricating fake recommendation letters on behalf of army units. Prakash had paid a sum of Rs 18,000 to Ranjit Singh for procuring the licence. Investigators had earlier recovered three revolvers and pistols along with six original arms licences.

During verification of genuineness of these licenses from the concerned district magistrate offices, it was revealed that they have been issued on the basis of recommendation certificate issued by the various army units including ordnance depot, Shakur Basti, Delhi and 5071 ASC Bn (MT) in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur.

"The said recommendation letters were found to be fake. Investigations revealed that several people residing in Delhi have obtained such arms licence on the basis of fake recommendation letters," a senior police official said.

It also came to light some of the licence holders were involved in criminal cases in Delhi and are not eligible for issuance of arms licenses from Delhi Police licensing branch. They have obtained the same from Jammu and Kashmir and are having arms and ammunition for their ulterior motives.

"It also came to light that three of the six licence holders, who had obtained such arms licences, had never worked for army or any security force. Moreover, they have not got their licences endorsed with the DCP of licensing branch since they are residing in Delhi and were having arms and ammunition with them," the official said.

Verification report of the arms licence issued in the name of Jai Prakash revealed that licensee has impersonated as Sepoy No 6923566-W of Unit–5071 ASC Bn.
