The clash took place when supporters of NC allegedly opposed to a public meeting planned by the PDP at the district headquarters, the sources said.

Within no time, the supporters of the two rival parties exchanged blows and used bamboo sticks to target each other.

Sensing trouble, police immediately swung into action and used batons to disperse the clashing supporters and later fired teargas shells to restore law and order, the sources said.

They said 12 persons sustained minor injuries in the clash and subsequent police action.

The situation in the town was tense but under control, the sources said adding reinforcements have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
