Nepal: BJP flays UPA govt's "abject failure" in foreign policy

As Nepal plunged into fresh political crisis on the issue of PM Prachanda's dismissal of the army chief, BJP attacked the UPA government saying the developments in that country were a reflection of its "abject failure" of its foreign policy in the neighbourhood.

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters in New Delhi that the UPA government "had no foreign policy achievement except the Indo-US nuclear deal. It never happened before that India's suggestions have been ignored. You achieve many things by using clout, which India lost during the UPA's regime".

Sinha said "developments in Nepal (after the PM dismissed the army chief there and the President asked him to stay put) are proof once again of the abject failure of the neighbourhood policy of the UPA government".

He said that "under the UPA, India appears to have lost its clout completely with its neighbours. Its soft approach towards Pakistan, its ad hoc policy in Sri Lanka and now its policy of appeasement in Nepal appear to have come full circle creating a dangerous situation for India".

Sinha expressed the hope that democracy will prevail in Nepal and that the work on framing of the new Constitution would get over soon.
