New grievance redressal system for tax payers in south Delhi

In a bid to simplify property tax issues and make the process easier for residents, who earlier had to stand in unending queues to get their questions answered, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has started a grievance redressal mechanism. Residents can simply call up or send an email to resolve their property tax queries.

According to BN Singh, assessor and collector, South Corporation, emails and calls have already started coming. “The queries are varied from tax rates in the next financial year, whether benefit is being given or not, whether the online payment system is working or not and so on,” Singh said, adding that through this system people can also lodge complaints.

In the next financial year, the corporation has set the property tax target at Rs 704 crore. According to the assessor and collector, last year, when the corporation had collected a record Rs 620 crores in lieu of property tax, scrutiny was a major tool used. “Over 40,000 such properties have been discovered and taxed accordingly,” Singh said.
