Newly wed couple attempts suicide

Fearing strict punishment from their parents, a 20-year-old girl and her 23-year-old husband attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills at Gulmohar Apartments here on Friday morning. The two, Priti Singh and Manoj Chaudhary, had married against their parents’ wishes a few days ago.

Neighbours took them to Kailash hospital, where their condition was said to be stable.

“We have been in love for three years now. My parents approved of Priti, but her uncle wanted her to marry someone else. Even her brother was against our relationship. He had threatened to kill us. We eloped and came to Greater Noida. Last night, we got a threat call from her brother and we decided to end our lives,” Manoj said.

“Priti and Manoj were admitted to the hospital at 7.19 a.m. in an unconscious state. Their stomachs were immediately washed,” said Dr. Sannil Kapoor, Medical Superintendent of Kailash hospital.

Kasna SHO Arun Kumar Singh said Manoj is a software engineer from Bulandshahr, who works in Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad. Priti is a resident of Murad-nagar, Ghaziabad.
