NGOs told to file report on pollution

To frame better policies for conserving environment, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has invited NGOs and other stakeholders to study eight areas of pollution in the city and come up with a comprehensive report.

The DPCC comes up with its own reports on pollution every year, but this time it wants experts from each field to join hands for better understanding of the situation. The eight areas of study will be — domestic waste water, municipal solid waste, biomedical waste, plastic waste, battery waste, electronic waste, industrial pollution and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) statistics.

With rising population and pollution, the city needs newer ways of tackling the situation, and according to a DPCC official, it means augmentation of statistics on the status of pollution. For example, biomedical waste and electronic waste are new problems that have to be dealt with more effectively.

The study will tally the number of beds in hospitals, the waste generated by each patient on an average and the violation of the disposal rules.

“To make better policies, we need to understand the nitty-grities of pollution and how it affects the environment and people. So, it is important to get views and compilation of data from people who work on the ground level,” said another DPCC official. He said the last date of submission for quotation from stakeholders is November 21. Apart from statistics, case studies will also be carried out on different kinds of pollution.

“We will try and computerise the data collected, so that it is available to the public,” he said.
