Sterry’s counsel Devadatt S. Kamat told a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan that his client, currently in hiding, ran the risk of being caught and deported following the Centre’s August 10 decision to cancel his PIO card issued to him on October 11, 2006.

Thereafter, he was directed to leave India within 72 hours failing which coercive steps would be taken against him.

Kamat said his client was forced to come to the Supreme Court as the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court refused to give urgent hearing to his plea and instead fixed August 28 to take up the case.

However, the Supreme Court bench refused to give urgent hearing to Maxwell saying he had not yet surrendered. It fixed Tuesday to take up his petition.
