"The incident was reported from the Kondli village area at 8 a.m.," I.B. Rani, additional DCP (east) told HT.
According to the police, around 200 residents from Kondli village, Rajbir colony, Baladi Basta and adjacent areas started assembling at the Kondli Bridge around 7:45 am.
"Hundreds of people from the village and surrounding areas started blocking traffic, harassing commuters, vandalising public property and pelting stones," said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
The police said two DTC buses and a Hyundai i10 were damaged during the stone pelting.
"The residents were vandalising local shops when we reached the spot. When we tried to stop them, they started pelting stones at us. They assaulted our officers and destroyed two of our motorcycles,” the police officer said.
Eight officers from the New Ashok Nagar Police Station, including the station house officer, suffered minor injuries in the incident.
"We have arrested around 12 people for rioting and obstructing the duty of a government servant," said Rani.
"We have detained 25 people who were identified as being behind most of the damage and for inciting the mob," the officer added.
The residents of the area, however, refuted the police's claims. "There is no water scarcity in our area. The disturbance had been planned and motivated by local politicians for their vested interests and the police were party to it," said Munni Khatoon (45), a resident of Rajbir Nagar.
Residents alleged that the police had rounded up innocent persons and allowed those responsible for the vandalism to go scot free.
