The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the revised unit cost from Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 (Rs 38,500 for difficult and hilly regions) to enable construction of good quality toilets as per plan and specifications.

The revised unit cost will be made effective from April 1, 2010.

It also approved increase in revision of unit cost of Anganwadi toilets being constructed under the Total Sanitation Campaign from the existing Rs 5000 to Rs 8000 (Rs 10,000 for difficult and hilly terrains).

However, there will be no change in the funding pattern, the Cabinet decided.

The revision will cost the Government an additional financial burden of Rs 353.74 crore.
