A Canada-based NRI family, currently in Delhi, was in for a rude shock when they discovered cash and valuables worth lakhs kept in their bank and at home, missing, police said. The Sharmas are currently living in west Delhi's Hari Nagar and their driver's hand is suspected in the theft, police said.
Preeti Sharma (23), the complainant said on January 1, she found Rs 1,10,000 kept in her bank account and US$ 8,500 and diamond jewellery kept in the house missing. Their driver, Sunil Sharma (30) was also missing.
Preeti claims she received an SMS from ICICI bank on January 1 that Rs 1,10,000 was debited from her account. "I looked for my ATM cards. The ICICI Gold Card and HDFC ATM card were missing," she said.
The driver Sunil denied knowledge about the robbery. "The next day, Sunil did not turn up and his mobile was also switched off," said a police officer. A police team was sent to Sunil's home in Haryana. His relatives said he hadn't come home for two years. A theft case under Section 381 of the IPC was registered."
"The victim had noted down the ICICI ATM's pin code on the card's rear side and the thief could use the card to withdraw money," a police officer said.
Preeti lives in Canada with her mother and nephew. Her father and brother died in 2005 and the family was to return to Canada in October 2007.
