A scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University had recently lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police that someone created a community on popular social networking site Orkut, linking him with several women in the university.

Rohan (name changed) told HT on Friday, “JNU is a small place where everyone knows each other. It has put me and the girls in a very embarrassing position.”

Earlier this year, an airhostess had complained that she had been profiled on Orkut as a “sex-struck woman”. The Economic

Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police has received 35 complaints this year against the site and has so far registered six cases, said DCP (EOW) Prabhakar.

“The sites are being used to settle personal scores and defame people,” said Joint CP (Crime) Alok Kumar Verma. A police officer said that since most such profiles are created at cyber cafés, it is often very difficult to identify the culprit. Following the complaint, the university has banned Orkut, JNU’s Chief Proctor HB Bohidar said.
