Calling the attack on its national Sanaullah lodged in Kot Bhalwal prison as condemnable, Pakistan's foreign office in Islamabad asked India to provide the best medical care to him. Sanah-ullah is receiving treatment at PGI, Chandigarh - one of the best medicare facilities in India.

Later in the evening, Pakistani mission officials were provided access to him.

Pakistan stated the attack as an "obvious retaliation to the death of Sarabjit Singh". "We would remind the Indian government of its responsibility in ensuring the safety of Pak prisoners in India," the foreign office in Islamabad said.

Indian external affairs ministry said the matter would be thoroughly probed. Home ministry officials rejected suggestions that the attack had anything to do with Sarabjit's killing. The home ministry said Sanaullah and suspect Vinod Kumar were chatting before Kumar attacked him. "It is not a pre-meditated attack," a ministry official said.
