Political career: Active in politics since 1974. “Nobody in my family had ever joined politics. It was on Lalit Maken’s insistence that I fought my first election,” he said. Sawhney fought his first Municipal election in 1977 and lost by 36 votes. Sawhney first fought assembly elections in 1998 and won. Re-elected in 2003.

Family: Sawhney’s wife Ranjit Kaur is a homemaker. They have a son and a daughter. Sawhney said he is a family man and prefers spending time with his family. Playing carrom with his children is his favourite pastime. He is an avid badminton player. “We have a badminton court in our courtyard. I play badminton very regularly. It helps me keep fit,” he said. Sawhney has been actively organising Ramlila for many years.

Cars: Sawhney drives a Skoda Octavia. His son owns a Toyota Innova.
