The house is divided over the naming of Delhi’s tallest building, the civic center.
The legislative wing of the BJP-dominated Municipal Corporation of Delhi wants to name the civic centre after senior BJP leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. To this, the Opposition in the MCD has said that if the building has to be named after a political leader, the Congress would rally for party president Sonia Gandhi’s name. To make things more complicated, the teachers’ association of MCD schools has demanded that the building be named after Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar.
Members of the association will stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar on Friday for the same.
The 28-storey building will house the MCD headquarter and the Income Tax department. The Rajya Sabha secretariat has also shown interest in acquiring commercial office space at the centre.
“The centre is for the people and hence, its present name — the civic centre — is ideal. However, if the building has to be named after a leader, then we will press for Sonia Gandhi’s name. The construction of the centre had started when the Congress was in power. If the BJP goes ahead with their decision, we will complain to the Lt. Governor,” said Jai Kishan Sharma, Leader of the Opposition in the MCD House.
The teachers’ association would also send a memorandum to the President and Prime Minister requesting that the centre be named after Ambedkar. “Our union had a meeting recently where it was decided that the name of the civic centre should be Dr Ambedkar Centre. This will be an important step for the country as it will reflect the emotions of the minorities,” said Ram Kishan Puniya, chairman of the BSKB teachers’ union.
Recently, Mayor Arti Mehra had received a letter from Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan seeking to consider naming of the centre after Vajpayee.
